Project Description
The City of Saskatoon decided to construct a new swimming facility suitable for international competitions. The new facility was to be located between two recently constructed high schools. Indoor pools have huge energy and water demands year round, so every effort was made on the design to reduce these impacts on the environment. The primary way that the energy demands of the facility were met was with a unique energy recovery heat pump. The heat pump is designed to extract from a chilled water loop that feeds the pool and the adjacent high schools. The extracted heat is then used for pool heating, domestic hot water heating and a variety of other loads within the pool facility. Condensing boilers and variable speed pumps combine to form the rest of the heating system. Shower water heat recovery, variable speed kitchen exhaust, variable speed dehumidification units and many other features combine to make this facility one of the most energy efficient of its type in the world.
