Green Street Recycling Infrastructure Program

Project Description

Annually, the City of Saskatoon generates approximately 100,000 MT of stockpiled hot mix asphalt concrete (HMAC) and portland cement concrete (PCC) rubble from utility and infrastructure repairs. Given signigicant infrastructure renewal underway in the City, a need to increase the recycling of in situ road materials and offsite stockpiled HMAC and PCC rubble materials was identified.

The City of Saskatoon Green Street Recycling Infrastructure Program and PSI piloted the integration of advanced second generation rubble material processing with mechanistic engineering materials characterization and structural design. Reclaiming and recycling rubble materials for road rehabilitation was determined to be a cost effective alternative to using source aggregates. Based on field test sections, recycled materials provide a sustainable infrastructure rehabilitation solution with econmical, environmental, and social benefits.
