Project Description
The Circle Drive freeway between Millar Avenue and Attridge Drive is the busiest traffic corridor in Saskatoon with an average daily traffic count of 64,000. This high traffic volume has resulted in frequent congestion during peak hour periods which precipitated the City's desire to add one lane of traffic in each direction so that delays and fuel consumption experienced by the traveling public were reduced.
The existing Circle Drive Bridge is a twin four span steel bridge which had been designed for the addition of one lane of traffic in each direction by in-filling the space between the structures with a new girder and deck surface. Initial cost estimates, however, revealed this solution would be significantly larger than the project budget could allow so a creative alternative was required.
The selected alternative converted the existing pedestrian walkways attached to the driving surface into vehicle lanes. Since these walkways were the only available crossing point for pedestrians using the adjacent Meewasin Valley pathways a replacement pedestrian bridge was required.
The selected pedestrian structure design concept was based on a cable stayed flat plate design suspended in the space between the structures originally allotted for traffic lanes. This design solution complemented the existing arched bridge structure as the slim profile and thin hangers visually disappeared when viewed from a distance. Additionally, the structure was situated at a lower level to minimize transitions from the adjacent walkway systems which created a shorter walkway and a pleasing walking experience as pedestrians were isolated from traffic noises above while being exposed to the river environment below.
