Wascana Creek Rehabilitation Project

The Wascana Lake and Creek system is the heart and pride of Regina, Saskatchewan. The creek has flooded at various times resulting in flood damage to an established residential area. Flood protection dykes along the Riverside Reach of Wascana Creek were constructed over a period of time. The dykes have become a valued open space and have structurally deteriorated to the extent that restoration was required. Restoration consisted of a variety of techniques including construction of a mechanically stabilized soil slope, slope flattening and toe erosion protection. Soil bioengineering techniques with adapted native species were used to stabilize the rehabilitated dyke and provide erosion protection. Open space development consistent with the "slow" feel of the dyke space and accessibility requirements was provided. A high level of community involvement through the preliminary design, design and construction phases was incorporated in the project.

The Design Team consisted of: Prime Consultant - Clifton Associates Ltd., Landscape Architecture - Crosby Hanna Associates Ltd., Soil Bioengineering - Polster Environmental Consultants Ltd., Hydrology - Water Resource Consultants Ltd.
