CES 2003 Brian Eckel Award of Merit in the Environmental Category
City of Prince Albert - Biosolids Composting Facility
Project Description:
- Legislation prevented the disposal of sludge from the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) process at the landfill.
- Environmental conditions precluded use of outdoor composting to meet the volume of sludge produced by the WWTP.
- The solution was a completely enclosed composting building, sized to permit handling sludge and compost, in a controlled environment.
- Benefits include the re-use of biosolids in final phase of landfill decommission.

The Judges´ Comments:
- This project applies a non-conventional solution (by Canadian and North American standards) to the treatment of municipal wastes that results in an end-product that can be recycled.
- Based on the experience gained from this project, this could become an accepted method of biosolid waste disposal for other Saskatchewan communities.
- This is no small feat considering the annual flows and climactic extremes experienced in central Saskatchewan.
