Award Category: Environment
Enhanced In-Situ Hydrocarbon Recovery Dual Phase Vacuum Extractions and
Pneumatic Fracturing

Stantec Consulting Ltd., in conjunction with Ground Effects Environmental Services Inc., was retained by TransGas Limited to design, commission and conduct performance monitoring for a dual phase vacuum extraction system installed at the Cantuar Field Scrubber site located near Success, Saskatchewan. Through the operation season hydrocarbon recovery rates began to display a decreasing trend approaching diminishing returns. At this point, it was decided that an enhancement technology was required to increase the hydrocarbon recovery rates. Teaming pneumatic fracturing with the existing dual phase vacuum extraction system proved successful and suggested that an initial remediation timeline of five additional years could be reduced to months.

The Judges' Comments

"This project is a Dual Phase Vacuum Extraction process that is an in-situ contaminant remediation technology that removes hydrocarbons from sub-surface soils and groundwater. In addition, this project borrows technology from the oil and gas sector by using pneumatic fracturing as an enhancement to the DPVE process, increasing its effectiveness and range. This application involved remediation of the Cantuar Field Scrubber site owned by TransGas Limited in Southwest Saskatchewan. The successful application of this enhanced in-situ process will have additional applications and can only bode well for other environmental challenges within Saskatchewan. It is projects such as this which gives Saskatchewan residents cause to show confidence in the engineering profession to deal with environmental issues."
