The Core Area Park, Underground Stormwater Detention Structure Facility was constructed in 2001 to provide improved flood protection for residents of the Core Area Neighbourhood of the City of Regina. The project construction included: a 6,300 m3 cast-in-place concrete underground detention structure, tie-ins to the existing storm system, a relief sewer, a domestic main relocation, high capacity catchbasins and site works. Many features were included in the structural design to extend the structure life and to provide ease of maintenance.
The $2.0 M project was designed and constructed in less than eight months to qualify for funding under the Canada - Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program and was completed on schedule and on budget.

"The work is part of an ongoing civic program of stormwater management to upgrade facilities in areas with a history of flooding. This particular facet required exhaustive analysis of material options and structure shapes to attain a cost effective, long life and easily maintained storage facility. The result was a thorough and effective project on schedule and substantially below budget despite a tight time frame and add-on work."
